Trio of Scott Boras clients fell over $150M short of predictions for contract values

One report released Tuesday shows that baseball super-agent Scott Boras and three of his star clients fell over $150M short in guaranteed money from predictions on the offseason contracts they eventually signed.

Starting pitcher Blake Snell was the latest standout to sign a deal, joining the San Francisco Giants on Monday night with a reported two-year, $62M contract with an opt-out after 2024. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner will form an elite pair at the top of the Giants rotation, combining with last year's runner up for the hardware, Logan Webb.

As the days and weeks went on, it looked for a while like Snell might not find a fit by Opening Day. Webb will get the nod in the season-opener next Thursday, but Snell shouldn't be too far behind after relocating 500 miles north, going from San Diego to San Francisco.

Former NL MVP first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger opted out of his deal with the Chicago Cubs in November before re-signing in the Windy City in late February. Bellinger won the hardware in 2019 with the Los Angeles Dodgers before his production significantly declined from 2020-22.

He joined the Cubs last offseason and bounced back with 26 home runs, 97 RBI a career-high 20 stolen bases and a .307/.356/.525 slash line in 2023. Bellinger's new contract is for three years and $80M but contains an opt-out clause after each of the first two seasons.

Snell will be joining another marquee Giants newcomer in third baseman Matt Chapman.

The one-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner spent the first five seasons of his career in the Bay Area with the Oakland Athletics, before playing the 2022 and 2023 campaigns with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Chapman signed a one-year $18M contract with San Francisco in early March, a deal that includes player options for 2025 and 2026 and a mutual option for 2027.
