Watch: Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz flash his arm… and bat

The Washington Nationals have longed for a franchise catcher. They may have finally found the answer in Keibert Ruiz. The 23-year old is set for his first full season in the majors and he’s already flashing his arm and bat on Opening Day against the New York Mets.

Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin allowed a lead-off single to Starling Marte in the first inning. Picking up on Corbin’s slow delivery, Marte tried to steal second base. However, Ruiz rifled the ball to second to catch Marte out.

It was a special throw especially considering how long Corbin took to release the pitch.

But Ruiz wasn’t done showing his talents. In his first at-bat, he delivered with a double, hitting the ball against the right field wall.

The Nationals acquired Keibert Ruiz along with fellow prospects pitchers Josiah Gray and Gerardo Carrillo and outfielder Donovan Casey from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Max Scherzer, Trea Turner trade.

Washington needed to replenish its farm system. But, they feel good about the prospects of landing the club’s catcher of the future.
