Jannik Sinner Finally Wins in Miami Becoming World Number 2
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

What a start to the tennis season for Jannik Sinner.

The young Italian has captured his third title of the season, defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 in the Miami Open finals. This is the first time Sinner has won the title in Miami. It was his third trip to the final. He had come up short in the other two visits, most recently to Daniil Medvedev last year and Herbert Hurkacz in 2021.

During the season, Sinner had a record of 22-1, with his only loss coming to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Sinner opened the season by winning the Australian Open before going to Rotterdam and winning there. But in Miami, after a tough loss to Alcaraz in the California desert, Sinner looked unstoppable.

Sinner’s play in Miami was similar to how Novak Djokovic played in some events, where he was the best player on the court, and it was not even close. Sinner was moving beautifully and hitting all his shots. The only person who could be Sinner was Sinner himself, which shows how good he was playing.

Between the semifinals and finals of the Miami Open, Sinner only lost seven games. Jannik Sinner did not drop a set on his way to the title. He easily defeated Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal, then took out Dimitrov, who climbed back into the Top 10 and played some of his best tennis since 2018. Sinner took advantage of his break opportunities and Dimitrov’s mistakes. Nobody was beating Jannik Sinner on March 31st in Miami.

Jannik Sinner is putting the tennis world on notice this year. With the win in Miami, he passed Carlos Alcaraz in the rankings, jumping from World Number Three to World Number Two. That is the highest ranked for any Italian player in the sport’s history.

Sinner is the first Italian player to win multiple Masters 1000 titles, winning in Toronto in the Summer and now in Miami. The other Italian to win a Masters 1000 event title was Fabio Fognini when he went on his run in 2019 at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. Sinner now is up to 13 career ATP Titles and, since November, has a record 43-2.

At some point this season, the young Italian will be the World Number One Player.
